It is a large enough survey to include a number of individuals who belong to horizontal and vertical associations. One possible objection to the use of this data is that some of the possible effects that we could find are the consequence of specific regional characteristics. However, Andalusia is the largest region of Spain and its degree of economic development is very similar to the southern European’s mean. Their representative institutions are perfectly assimilable to European ones. Nevertheless, the use of a multivariable estimation allows me to isolate the effects of the characteristics of the type of association in the development of particularized trust from the impact of sociodemographic characteristics, such as income or education.

The type, in terms of a signaling game, relates to any kind of private information. Trust is, after all, an expectation, a belief about the other players’ strategies. Repetitive interactions should provide information about the other players’ type. Thanks to this information, each player can update her expectations about when to trust. It is a type of “particularized trust,” a trust in known people (Uslaner, 1999: 124). Note that this does not mean that participation in an association inevitably generates systems of trust.

In particular, members of horizontal associations are more likely to trust their comembers than members of vertical ones. It seems, thus, that information and power asymmetries are a real obstacle for the development of relations of trust between the members of associations characterized by lack of accountability. The three control variables are also significant: elder and more affluent people tend to trust their fellow members more and, perhaps surprisingly, more educated people tend to trust less.
