To what extent do representations of black female sexuality in the films found available for this study deviate from expected sexual codes of behaviors for women in general? To what extent are these representations perpetuated by black and white male filmmakers?

Significantly, while words and visual images constantly compete for control of viewers’ perceptual field, the primacy of the moving image supersedes that which is heard. Being “attention-centered” (Postman, 1979), the moving image becomes a reservoir of cultural information because visual images contain a great deal more information than a speaker can produce at any one time. It was Postman (1979) who suggested that in our visual culture, “knowing” has come to mean having pictures rather than words in our heads, by which he means that it is the visual images which inform what we come to know, what and whom we value, and what behaviors are socially in vogue.
